Twenty-four syllables, recited every dawn for three thousand years
Ṛgveda 3.62.10. Three lines of eight, addressed to the sun as the one who sets thought in motion. You now have everything you need to read it: the roots, the prefixes, the compounds, the meter.

The missing syllable
Gāyatrī means three lines of eight — twenty-four syllables. Count the first line as it is written — तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं, leaving aside the ॐ, which stands outside the count — and you get seven. Reciters have always restored the eighth by opening the last word out to वरेणियम्. You can hear the meter demand it — which is the same ear you trained in Level 4.
How the tradition reads it
सत्यं परं धीमहि
The seed formula behind the verse: “we hold in meditation that which is truth, and beyond.” Viśvāmitra is said to have seen the whole mantra out of these four words.
What is being asked for
Not favours. The one prayer in it is प्रचोदयात् — that our intelligence be set in motion by whatever impels creation and is the source of the lights.
Three ways to do it
गानम् singing it · ध्यानम् meditating on it · जपः repeating it. Daily, and with attention — the tradition is blunt that going through the motions does nothing.
